"It is not quite right practice that people with special status can be easily arrested, even on suspicion of some serious crime," the prosecutor general said.

According to him, this is "wrong". "There must be some mechanisms, constraints, because it represents the interests of a large group of the population, he is a senator, an elected person," Chaika added.

He also pointed out that under international law Russia has the right to request materials on this case in order to bring the criminal to justice, but already in accordance with Russian legislation - "if he committed a crime".

The senator from Dagestan, Suleiman Kerimov, was detained at the Nice airport on 20 November. On November 23, he was charged with money laundering and tax fraud.
