As explained to Kommersant, at about 3:30 pm during a planned training flight at one of the military airfields in the Nizhny Novgorod region, an Mig-31 fighter aircraft training center was crashed.
The incident occurred near the town of Kulebaki. On board were two pilots - an instructor and a cadet, they ejected and went out to communicate, Interfax reported. "The pilots were promptly evacuated by the specialists of the search and rescue service of their lives, nothing is threatened," the Russian Defense Ministry stressed, adding that the flight was carried out without ammunition, and the plane fell in a deserted place and did not lead to destruction on the ground.
The commission of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is working to determine the causes of the accident at the site of the fall. A group of the military investigation department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Nizhny Novgorod garrison also went there. According to preliminary data, a technical malfunction led to the crash of the aircraft.

To date, almost all serviceable MiG-31s have been upgraded. The rest must be finalized by the end of 2018.
At 12 km from the city of Kulebaki there is a military airfield of Savasleika, on which the branch of the 4th State Center for Training Aviation Personnel and Military Tests of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is stationed.
