On March 23, 2017 in Kiev, at the intersection of the Taras Shevchenko’s Boulevard and Pushkin Street, Denis Voronenkov, accompanied by a bodyguard, was on his way to meet with former deputy Ilya Ponomarev. The attacker was brought to the crime scene by Daewoo Lanos. Near the hotel Premier Palace he caught up with the men and shot at Voronenkov. The guard tried to hit him with a bag, but he shot at him too. After a few more shots at Voronenkov, the killer tried to hide, but the guard managed to get his gun and shot the killer. Voronenkov died on the spot. The bodyguard was taken to the Main Military Clinical Hospital of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the killer – to the City Clinical Hospital No. 17. In the afternoon, he died under an operation at the hospital.
