The number of closed hypermarkets for the sale of goods for home and repair in 2016 for the first time in six years exceeded the number of open, counted in Infoline. This is due to the fact that bankrupt retailers turned the business on the background of the fall of the DIY market. Large players, however, continue to actively develop.
In 2016, 48 DIY hypermarkets were closed, according to the research "The Russian DIY Market: Results of 2016. Tendencies of 2017. Forecast to 2019", prepared by Infoline. Open last year there were 44 new stores. Thus, the number of introduced hypermarkets for the first time since 2010 turned out to be less than the number of closed ones.
Mostly, the objects of retailers in the bankruptcy procedure were closed: "Metrica", "Domocenter" and GC "Trest SCM", the study notes.
As of January 1, 2017, 407 DIY hypermarkets operated in Russia with a total trading area of more than 3 million square meters. M. A year earlier there were 411 large stores with an area of about 2.9 million square meters. M, leads the data Infoline. In 2016 DIY-trade market closed more than 180 objects of different formats with an aggregate area of 390 thousand square meters. M.
Despite the crisis, the largest operators of the market intensify investment activity and continue to open stores. Top 40 DIY retailers in 2016 increased the growth of retail space by 20%, to 321 thousand square meters. M (net growth was 191 thousand square meters). Of this volume, the leader of DIY-products Leroy Merlin accounted for 60% of the area. This year, the retailer planned to open 15-17 hypermarkets, a representative told Kommersant. Development is expected in Irkutsk, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Tyumen, Moscow, Moscow region and other regions.
The general director of the K-Route network Artem Tarayev recalled that the company had already opened one store in St. Petersburg this year. He noted: the network will continue to look for sites suitable for creating full-format construction hypermarkets. In Leroy Merlin, K-rauta and Petroviche said that they do not intend to close any of their stores. "In the capital, we plan to open about two points a year," said Petrovich's representative (currently there are 17 stores in the NWFD and the Central Federal District). According to him, within five years of investment in the development of the network will amount to about 8 billion rubles.
As Kommersant wrote earlier, the drop in the market for home and garden products, construction and finishing materials in 2016 accelerated to 8.8% against 5% in 2015. Before that, the market had grown five years in a row. The turnover of DIY retail last year amounted to 1.33 trillion rubles., Calculated in Infoline.
This year, Infoline analysts expect the market to begin recovering. According to their forecast, its turnover can increase by 1-2% primarily due to finishing materials (soft-DIY) and household goods (household). In addition, the growing market can be supported by the increasing demand for garden goods (greenhouses, fertilizers, seeds, seedlings, flowers, etc.). However, due to the decrease in the volume of construction of apartment buildings and individual housing, and also because of the growth in the share Housing, surrendering with decoration, sales of construction materials (hard-DIY) will continue to decline, Infoline predicts.
