In late February, Stockholm arbitration ruled on the dispute between Gazprom and Naftogaz. The arbitrators ruled that the Russian company should pay Ukrainian $ 4.63 billion for gas shortage under the transit agreement. Since before that, the arbitration ordered Kiev to pay Gazprom $ 2 billion for gas already delivered plus interest on arrears, Gazprom had to remain with Naftogaz about $ 2.6 billion. Gazprom appealed the decision of the court because it believes that with its violation.

After the court's decision, Gazprom announced that it would immediately begin to dissolve contracts for the supply of gas to Ukrainian consumers and gas transit to Europe. Both documents are valid until the end of 2019. According to Alexey Miller, the head of the company, Gazprom took this step, because it is categorically against Ukraine's solving its economic problems at its expense. "In such a situation, the continuation of contracts for Gazprom is economically inexpedient and unprofitable," he explained.

On April 11, the head of the Ministry of Energy of Russia Alexander Novak and European Commission Vice President Maros Shefovich discussed the supply of Russian gas to the EU, including through Ukraine. According to Nowak, Moscow is ready to consider the possibility of gas transit through Ukraine from January 1, 2020 "taking into account economically justified and competitive conditions for its use." Miller said that the company does not intend to refuse to transit gas through Ukraine. According to him, through the Ukrainian territory can annually supply to the EU 10-15 billion cubic meters. m of gas.

Minister of Energy of Ukraine Igor Nasalik said that Ukraine plans to keep gas transit after 2019 in a volume of at least 40 billion cubic meters. m. According to him, in the case of a smaller volume, it is economically unprofitable for Kiev. The official added that the head of the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission, Dominique Ristori, promised Ukraine that he would do his best to preserve the transit of fuel.

Vedomosti, citing two sources, reported that Gazprom and Naftogaz are discussing the terms of a new contract on the transit of gas through Ukraine to Europe. According to the interlocutors of the newspaper, it is a question of concluding a new contract from 2020.
