The Italian Financial Guard seized the yacht of Russian entrepreneur Andrey Melnichenko as part of EU sanctions, La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera report. We are talking about the yacht Sailing Yacht A worth €530 million, the ship was in the port of Trieste. Publications note that it is considered the world's largest private sailing yacht.
RBC sent a request to a representative of the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), which belonged to Melnichenko until March 9, and asked the Italian Financial Guard for comment. The length of Sailing Yacht A is 142 m, the displacement is about 13 thousand tons. Philippe Starck, it was launched in 2015 in Kiel, Germany. The EU placed Melnichenko and 13 other Russian businessmen on the sanctions list on March 9.
They were banned from entering the countries of association (except in cases of urgent humanitarian need or to participate in intergovernmental meetings aimed at the same goals as the sanctions), and the measures also imply the freezing of assets in the jurisdiction of the EU countries. Brussels said that these individuals "provide support and benefit" from the Russian government or "provide it with a significant source of income."
One of the reasons for imposing restrictions on representatives of Russian business in the EU was a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on February 24. It discussed the impact of sanctions on the economy. After that, it became known that Melnichenko, who, as of the end of 2021, together with his family indirectly owned 92.2% of SUEK's shares, ceased to be its beneficiary and left the company's board of directors. He also ceased to be a beneficiary and a member of the board of directors of EuroChem.
