The daughter of the ex-president of Angola, the richest woman in Africa, Isabelle dos Santos, has Russian citizenship by birth. About this "RIA Novosti" said the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“The indicated person did not receive Russian citizenship, since she had it initially,” the message said.

RBC sent a request to the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Earlier, a number of media outlets disseminated information that Dos Santos received Russian citizenship against the background of the proceedings launched against her in Angola. In a conversation with TASS, she said that she always had Russian citizenship. “I'm a native Russian woman,” she said.

Angolan authorities launched an investigation into Isabelle dos Santos at the end of last year. On December 31, an Angolan court seized funds in her and her husband's accounts. According to the Angolan Prosecutor General, they suspect her of dubious operations that cost the treasury more than $ 1 billion.

In 2016-2017, dos Santos led the largest state-owned oil company of Angola, Sonangol, and after leaving her post, she left the country. As the local newspaper Exspresso wrote, she, together with her husband Sindika Dokolo, a citizen of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and an entrepreneur-collector, moved to Dubai in 2019 and is not going to return to Angola.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Isabelle dos Santos called the investigation launched against her “a politically motivated witch hunt” by Angola’s president João Lawrence. According to her, Lawrence is trying to liquidate her business and “erase the legacy” of her father, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who served as president for 38 years.

Isabelle dos Santos was born in Baku in 1973 in the family of Jose Eduardo dos Santos and Penza native Tatyana Kukanova (now has British citizenship). At that time, her father was an Angolan revolutionary and activist of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola - the Labor Party. From September 21, 1979 to September 2017, he served as President of Angola.

When he was president, he appointed two of his ten children to leadership positions - daughter Isabelle became the head of Sonangol, and son Jose Filomenu became chairman of the National Welfare Fund of Angola. On March 26, 2018, the Angolan prosecutor charged Jose Filomen with a suspicion of fraud of $ 500 million. He headed the fund from June 2013 to January 2018.

Currently, the state of Isabelle dos Santos, according to Forbes, is estimated at $ 2.2 billion, making her the richest woman in Africa. According to the magazine, while her father was in power, she acquired stakes in Angolan companies, including banks and a telecommunications corporation. In particular, she owned the shares of Unitel mobile operator and Banco BIC. In the Forbes version of the richest people in Africa for 2019, dos Santos took eighth place. Only two women were in the top 20 - she and Folorunsho Alakia (vice chairman of the Nigerian oil company Famfa Oil).

Given the fact that Dos Santos is a citizen of Russia, then, therefore, she is also the richest Russian woman. Last year, Forbes called the country's richest woman the ex-wife of the former mayor of Moscow, Elena Baturin, with a fortune of $ 1.2 billion.
