The fortune of Vladimir Potanin has decreased by $ 3.6 billion since June 4, from $ 26.7 to $ 23.1 billion, according to Forbes Real Time. The drop in the assessment of the state of the general director of Norilsk Nickel, which owns 34% of the metallurgical giant, happened against the background of several high-profile accidents at the enterprises of the Norilsk Nickel group.

The first and largest of the accidents was the spill of about 21,000 tons of diesel fuel after the accident near Norilsk at TPP-3 of the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company (NTEK), a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel. The accident itself occurred on May 29, but it became widely known only on June 3, when it became the topic of a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, shown on television. A day later, one of the State Duma deputies, United Russia member Alexander Yakubovsky wrote a request to the head of the TFR, Alexander Bastrykin, with a proposal to take measures "to temporarily remove those responsible for actions or inaction" at the facility, including Vladimir Potanin, to conduct an objective investigation of the accident. Even Mikhail Prokhorov F 11 had to stand up for his former partner, who warned against calls for the nationalization of Norilsk Nickel and "trampling the businessman's reputation in the mud." The tense situation around the company negatively affected the quotes of its shares. If on the morning of June 3, Norilsk Nickel shares were traded on the Moscow Stock Exchange at a price of 22,398 rubles per share, then on June 4 they were at a minimum of 19,738 rubles. Potanin's fortune for June 4 fell by $ 1.5 billion. The next day, June 5, Potanin attended a meeting with Putin and promised there to eliminate the consequences of the accident at the expense of the company, after which the shares of Norilsk Nickel recovered somewhat.

Potanin himself estimated the cost of eliminating the accident at 10 billion rubles. After Rosprirodnadzor estimated the damage to the environment at 148.2 billion rubles on July 6, Norilsk Nickel's quotes reacted with another drop, dropping from 19,378 rubles to 18,260 rubles apiece at the end of the trading day. Goldman Sachs analysts in their report indicated that the event had already affected the price of Norilsk Nickel, as the loss of market capitalization in the amount of $ 7.7 billion (at the time of the announcement of the damage assessment) is comparable to Rosprirodnadzor's estimate of $ 2.1 billion. Norilsk Nickel "to pay $ 2 billion, it is not yet clear - the company is going to challenge the assessment of Rosprirodnadzor.

The most recent sharp drop in Norilsk Nickel quotations occurred on Monday, July 13 - after it became known on July 12 that about 44.5 tons of aviation fuel had spilled near the village of Tukhard, Krasnoyarsk Territory, from a depressurized pipeline owned by JSC Norilsktransgaz (included in Norilsk Nickel). At the auction on the Moscow Exchange on July 13, Norilsk Nickel became the leader in the fall - its shares fell by 2.7%, to 18,050 rubles per share. The fortune of the main owner of the company fell by $ 383 million

Despite the decline in his fortune, Potanin still holds the first place among Russian billionaires - his closest pursuer, the main owner of Novatek, Leonid Mikhelson, with a fortune of $ 22.3 billion, is $ 800 million behind him.
