Russian ships with cruise missiles Caliber will carry combat duty in the Mediterranean Sea. This was stated by President Vladimir Putin.

About plans for a constant watch in the Mediterranean ships of the Navy with cruise missiles, Putin told the meeting with the participation of the leadership of the Defense Ministry and defense enterprises. The head of state explained the need for these measures by the continuing threat from terrorists in Syria.

"This year 102 expeditions of ships and submarines are planned. At the same time, in connection with the continuing threat of attacks by international terrorists in Syria in the Mediterranean Sea, our ships with cruise missiles Caliber will carry a constant military watch, "Putin said.

According to the president, the volume of problems solved by the Navy has grown significantly in recent years. The geography of the presence of the Russian fleet has expanded: it concerns the Mediterranean Sea, the North Atlantic and the maritime space of the Asia-Pacific region, he said.

Putin noted the well-coordinated work of the crews in Syria. As he said, blows by cruise missiles and effective work of the deck aviation caused significant damage to terrorists. "The building up of the fleet's combat potential, the practice of long-distance sea expeditions, exercises, and training should continue," the president stressed.

Against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Syria, Russian ships equipped with the "Caliber" regularly make military campaigns in this region. Thus, in the middle of March, the frigate Admiral Essen was sent to watch the Mediterranean Sea. He previously participated in the military operation against terrorists: in particular, last September struck "Caliber" on the positions of militants in the area of the city of Deir ez Zor.
